Beursstudenten worden o.a. geselecteerd op hun vrijwilligerswerk. Ook als ze studeren stoppen ze daar tijd in. Hieronder een paar voorbeelden.

Nombulelo

Nombulelo (3de jaars Social Work) haalde zelfs de krant. Ze organiseerde een Familiedag voor ouderen en hun familie. Doel was om voorlichting te geven over het verouderingsproces en zo meer begrip te kweken voor de problemen waar ouderen mee te kampen hebben. Nombulelo: 'The day was about joining hands with different people, families, communities and the elderly in order to address challenges faced by the elderly. In most cases the elderly are treated negatively as a result of the diseases they suffer from as they grow older: dementia, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, arthritis, high blood pressure and so on.' Ze worden niet begrepen, uitgesloten en soms zelfs tot heks verklaard: 'Some elders are only loved when they are going to get their pension money. Some are left with grandchildren to look after with their pension money, some are outcasts in their own communities because they are accused of being witches.'

Marvin

Marvin (3de jaars Hospitality Management): “In the past six months a few colleagues and I spent time collecting teddy bears and blankets for homes that are underprivileged, to prepare for Winter. We raised some money selling boerewors rolls and chips to fellow students on Campus. We also raised funds for our end of year event: we were able to donate R16 000 to the Reach For A Dream Foundation” .

Msawenkosi

Msawenkosi (3de jaars Commerce Accounting): “In the first semester I was asked by the Faculty of Commerce at UCT to be one of the facilitators to present a special course: Skills for Commerce. This course helps first year students to adjust to university life. I have continued with my help at Thandokulu High School. I have not been going every week but rather on request from the accounting teacher. I assisted them before the June examination as well. I was also invited by the principal to give motivational talks to all the grade 12 Learners. Here I shared my school experiences, my life at university and different careers they can pursue. I am planning to visit the grade 12’s again this semester and also give the application forms for UCT and CPUT”

Wanelisa

Wanelisa (3de jaars Politics and Social Athropology) : “My first project is called Conscious Conversations at UCT and supported by the SRC and UCT Transformation Office. We are committed to having inter-racial and inter-generational public forums that tackle the issue of race and racism in post apartheid South Africa. My second project is called Young Women’s Leadership and is also based at UCT. This project is also run in Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Johannesburg. We are young women who have been researching and mobilizing women on campus regarding their rights. Two senior researchers presented a paper at a conference in Spain, about our work. My last project is called Collective Young Voices which I run with a friend. It is dedicated to promoting poetry and seeking social justice through poetry performances. We work in partnership with the Lyrical Base Project (based in Langa) and we perform all over Cape Town.”

Melody

"Melody (3rd year Entrepreneurship) is still committed to the U–turn Homeless Ministry at her local church, working with the homeless adults to help build their morale and self-esteem. Her involvement with the project, Arise, is giving her great joy – she is working with abandoned babies, raped and abused children who are homeless."
