The 2000 launchThe Stichting Projecten Zuid-Afrika (SPZA) – South Africa Foundation was founded April 17th 2000 by Mrs. J.A. Saüer and Mr. H.O.G. Boerma.
Janna SauerJanna Sauer (1919-2010) spent her professional life working in hospitals. In the final stage of her career, she was director of the nursing staff of the Diaconessen Hospital in Groningen. Immediately following World War II she was involved in the organisation of holiday camps for starved children in Amsterdam. When she heard about the Zwelihle Summer School in 1999, she spent four weeks helping out as a volunteer. She brought with her a collection of books, from which she used to read to the children. Together with two young volunteers and a group of children, she put together a Christmas play. When ‘Makhulu Janna’ left, many tears were shed. Janna passed away on June 24th 2010, just after her 91st birthday. We miss her. Ricus BoermaRicus Boerma (1947) is an agricultural economist. Boerma is an advisor to the South Africa Foundation’s board. Together with his wife and a group of youths, he set up the Zwelihle Summer School, the first holiday school, in 1998. He puts a lot of time and effort into the Foundation. He advises the board and attends board meetings. He visits South-Africa every six months to visit partners and projects.
