Volunteering

With our Scholarship programme we want to give youngsters a future. Scholarships are granted to young men and women who have shown commitment to their community by working as a volunteer. Our partners recommend candidates for a bursary. Their recommendations are based on a number of criteria of which having been involved with the community as a volunteer is a very important one.
Study expenses are covered by:

  • an NSFAS loan (National Student Financial Aid Scheme), facilitated by ASSET and REAP
  • a contribution of the (extended) family, however small
  • our scholarship.

70-80%

Our partners assist the students in reaching their study goals. More than 70-80% of their students succeed in finishing their studies. The national average is less than 50%.

What Students Have to Say

LWAZI: 'I'm a hard worker and I think I've shown my commitment to my community. I believe that I have the potential to further studies but the only obstacle I'm facing right now is that my family will not be able to pay my fees at tertiary level.' Has been a holiday school volunteer for 4 years. Is now studying Chemical Science (3rd year)

SONWABILE: 'The bursary came at the time I thought I wasn't going to continue with my studies. The day I received news that I got the bursary I was very happy and I knew that was a turning point in my life and for the first time I could focus on my studies without worrying about books and transport.' Has been a holiday school volunteer for 4 years. Studied IT and holds a job as a consultant for an international IT company.

Learner Development Programme

The Learner Development Programme of partner ASSET (Association for Educational Transformation) is also part of our Scholardhip Programme. ASSET offers 11th and 12th graders extra classes on Saturday and during school holidays. Over 1.000 young people attend the classes.

Students, parents and schools place high value on ASSET's work:

"A friend of mine attended the school. I developed envy. I was furious because this is what I needed since I desired to become successful. I decided to attend the school all by myself, and walked from Ocean View to Masiphumelele. When I got there, they just couldn't refuse me. Every Saturday thereafter, I walked to the school and back. Asset, I believe that you are the stepping-stone to my success."

"Asset has played a big role in my life. I will continue to share my success with others in need and make a difference in other people's lives as Asset has done in my life."

"On behalf of the parents, learners and teachers of Ocean View Secondary School I would like to express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for what you have done for our children. We wish your association everything of the best. May your team keep up the good work!"

"Our school vision is a reality with the help of Asset, We want to congratulate and honour you for our achievement."

"The impact Asset is having is so wonderful that we would really like to work together forever. First is the impact on learner behaviour and attitude. Our learners' behaviour has improved so much, especially in time management and being in classes on time. Secondly the impact on their performance is so amazing."
