Thembeka

Thembeka is lucky. Her Mum has a job. She works as a 'nanny' and is away during the week. On Sunday she comes home, bringing money and food.
Each day after school Thembeka and her sisters go to the after care kids club. It is great fun. Granny is really too tired to take care of them.

Goals

Goals of after school care:

  • To keep children off the streets in a safe environment.
  • To offer children fun, knowledge and skills.

Computer classes and soup

At after school care children are offered a variety of activities such as drama, making music, dancing, art & craft, sport and games, assistance with home work, education about hiv/aids, computer classes. They also get something to eat: bread, soup and fruit. Watch the Film about Hou Moed, one of our After School partners.

Townships and farms

The Stichting Projecten Zuid-Afrika - South Africa Foundation supports after school care organised by local schools and organisations in townships. We also support after care for farm children. Many farmworkers and their families still live in abject poverty and have to face harsh circumstances every day.

Learning difficulties

Several organisations offer special assistance to children with learning difficulties. Net vir Pret Barrydale started a 'paired reading' programme, where volunteers assist children individually with learning how to read. With great results. Many children are now doing much better at school.

More obedient

From a research report on Net vir Pret, an after school care organisation in Barrydale: ' ... I think this project offers tremendous possibility and could grow well beyond its current capacity. '
A teacher about the impact of after school care: 'The children are sweeter, more obedient, more at school' .

Paying with recyclables

After care is not for free. Every family has to pay something: money, a bag of recyclables, volunteering. Some partners - together with parents - organise a fund raising event in the community.
