Zoleka and Nomza

Every morning at 07:00 AM Zoleka brings her daughter Nomza (4) to nursery school. In the afternoon Zoleka often has to hurry to pick up Nomza before closing time. Zoleka finds that very difficult, especially these past few months. She always seems to be pressed for time. But Zoleka is determined to pass her high school exams.

Goals of the Programme

Our child sponsorship programme focuses on nursery schools and primary schools in townships. Goals are:

To give marginalised children a chance to go to good quality nursery and primary schools.
To improve the quality of nursery schools through professional training and assistance.
To assist good quality nursery and primary schools financially. We assist 7-10 nursery schools and three Waldorf schools.
To improve the quality of life of disabled children.
To assist children in 'earning' their own school uniform and school equipment.

Nursery Schools

The nursery schools that we sponsor receive professional training, advice and guidance from our partner, the Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD). The nursery schools are sponsored until they qualify for government funding. We then gradually withdraw our support until they can manage on their own. This takes on average 2-3 years. As soon as the school can continue without our support the CECD recommends a new nursery school for our child sponsorship programme. Please check the list of the Nursery Schools that we sponsor.

Waldorf (Steiner) Schools

The Waldorf schools that we assist are: Hermanus Waldorf School (nursery and primary), McGregor Waldorf School (nursery and primary) and Zenzeleni School in Khayalitsha (primary only). The schools offer a holistic education where each pupil is treated as an individual. There is much scope for creativity. Performing as well as fine arts are an important part of the curriculum. As from class 3 children are taught in English. This gives them a headstart in their further education. Please watch a Film about Waldorf schools in South Africa. Shopping with Recyclables

Children can earn 'points' by collecting recyclables: glass and plastic bottles and tins. At the Recycle Swop Shop they can spend their points on toiletries, second hand clothes and shoes, toys and much more. The points can even buy them a new school uniform and school equipment.

As a sponsor parent you assist a child from a family at risk (unemployment, illness, single parent, teenage mother) to go to school. Waldorfscholen voor townshipkinderen

We steunen vijf Waldorfscholen (vrije scholen, Steinerscholen): Camphill School, Hermanus Waldorf School, McGregor Waldorf School, Khanyisa School en Zenzeleni School. Hermanus Waldorf School, McGregor Waldorf School en Zenzeleni bereiden kinderen voor op het vervolgonderwijs. McGregor heeft als enige een afdeling middelbare school. Creativiteit in denken en doen staat centraal. Kinderen leren er ook Engels lezen, schijven en spreken. Dat geeft ze een uitstekende start als ze verder willen leren. Khanyisa is gespecialiseerd in onderwijs voor kinderen met leermoeilijkheden. Omdat hun leerlingen lang niet allemaal kunnen doorstromen naar het vervolgonderwijs, is er veel aandacht voor vakonderwijs zoals hout- en metaalbewerking. Camphill School is gespecialiseerd in onderwijs voor kinderen met een mentale beperking. Via de volgende link komt u bij een filmpje over Waldorfscholen. Sparen met zwerfvuil

Honderden kinderen verdienen punten met het inzamelen van zwerfvuil: glas, blik en plastic. Met die punten kunnen ze betalen in de Recycle Swop Shop. Er is ook een spaarsysteem. Kinderen kunnen dan voor grotere en duurdere dingen sparen, zoals een paar schoolschoenen of een tas. Een bijkomend voordeel is een schonere leefomgeving.

Sponsorouders en buddies gezocht

Sponsorouders en buddies helpen kinderen uit risicogezinnen (werkloosheid, ziekte, eenoudergezin, tienermoeder) door een deel van het schoolgeld of de buskosten te betalen. Dat kan door het beursfonds van de school of door een individueel kind te steunen. Sponsorouders en buddies ontvangen één keer per jaar een verslag. Zij die individuele kinderen steunen krijgen ook een schoolrapport en een foto van hun sponsorkind. Meer informatie vindt u bij Kosten per kind. Lees Waarom mensen sponsorouder worden. U kunt sponsorkinderen steunen door online te doneren (snel, makkelijk en veilig via Geefgratis) of door uw gift over te maken op onze rekening 39-04-37-603 bij de Triodos Bank o.v.v. SPO.
